Why GEO Matters to PR

The way people find information is changing. Instead of scrolling through search results, more people are turning to AI tools for direct answers, recommendations and summaries.

For PR professionals, this creates a new opportunity - and a new challenge: Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).

What is GEO?

GEO is the practice of improving how a brand, organisation or individual appears and is represented in AI-generated answers.

While traditional SEO focuses on helping a website rank in search results, GEO is about becoming a credible source that AI systems can draw on when answering questions.

For example, someone might ask an AI tool:

"Which cybersecurity companies are leaders in their field?"

The response could highlight just a handful of organisations. If your brand isn't recognised as relevant and authoritative, you may not be included.

Why should PR/Marketing teams care?

PR has always been about building credibility and reputation. Securing coverage in respected publications, positioning executives as experts and generating independent endorsements all help establish authority.

These activities are increasingly important in an AI-driven information environment.

A company repeatedly featured in credible publications, quoted by journalists and associated with a particular area of expertise builds a stronger digital reputation.

For example, if a business wants to be known for AI security, it needs more than a claim on its own website. Consistent coverage, expert commentary, original research and thought leadership can help establish that association across the wider web.

From visibility to authority

GEO doesn't replace traditional PR. Instead, it reinforces what good PR has always aimed to achieve.

The goal isn't simply to generate more mentions. It's to create a clear, credible narrative around a brand and its expertise.

As audiences increasingly ask AI for answers, PR has an important role to play in making sure brands are not just visible, but authoritative.

The future of PR isn't only about getting your brand into the conversation, it's about becoming a brand that deserves to be part of the answer.
